The rise of homemade beauty products, tutorials, beauty hacks…

Thanks to social media many influencers have developed a “homemade” trend. This rise comes from two different main reasons, the first one is ecological because thanks to this we can learn how to create with the remains, without buying excessive amounts of products with plastics and chemicals… Indeed, we had forgotten for a while that some beauty products can be made out of nothing just like in the old days, and thanks to those influencers we are getting back on this trail!
The second reason is economical, we are living in a society of consumption but we all still want to save our money, so those tutorials and homemade beauty hacks and products allow us to complete this goal.
This homemade trend thanks to social media has really good impact in the beauty industry but since there cannot only be good things around it, here are some negative impacts.
As we can learn to do our own nails, hairs, beauty products etc. we often stop going to some stores like for example the nail salon, or makeup brands shops… except sometimes on special occasions. So even if this trend has permitted many things and taught us to “do it yourself”, it can cause economic damages.
But one of the worst things I believe is the backlash some influencers encounter, indeed it’s public knowledge that on social media especially those who influence get criticized, shamed… It’s a real problem in the beauty industry on media but not only.
What I want to show with this point is that often influencers are not specialists in skincare for example, but they tested this product that is homemade, and it worked perfectly on them. But since they aren’t experts, they couldn’t know that one of the products they used can cause damage on some people skins… And against their will, they are facing a huge backlash on social media. For example, “EnjoyPhoenix” a French lifestyle Youtuber has experienced this situation because of homemade masks recipes she shared on her social media.
To conclude, social media have changed my vision of beauty but not in the visual aspects but in the technical one because thanks to them I learned to do some things myself. But in the end, social media even if they allow nice things for example with this trend, they still are the place where people can be harassed, backlashed… for something, they didn’t know! So be careful whenever you post something, you never know what can happen.
